Currently AATC is in the process of converting cleaning chemicals that are used here at H-JAIA to Green Seal Certified cleaning chemicals and developing a Green Cleaning Program.
On August 6, 2008 AATC released a Request for Proposal to prospective companies that will help us achieve our goal of diverting at least 70% of the waste that is generated here at H-JAIA from the landfill through recycling efforts, the program will be put into place by the chosen company on November 13, 2008.
AATC is in the process of replacing all of our toilets and flush valves in the airport that are currently 1.6 gallons per flush to 1.28 gallons per flush. This will conserve an estimated 36.3 million gallons of water per year. Together they will both save over 72 million gallons of water annually.
High reflectivity roofing has been installed on our Concourses A and B and will be installed on our Concourse D starting mid-October. This supports in our efforts to reduce the heat-island effect within the Airport complex.
AATC is currently a member of the US Green Building Council. The USGBC is a non-profit organization that promotes sustainability in how buildings are designed, built and operated.
The USGBC, in an effort to transform the “built” environment to sustainability, developed the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Certification process, also known as LEED. AATC has currently registered the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport for the LEED Existing Building Operations and Maintenance Certification process. LEED is a suite of standards for environmental sustainability in the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings.
Green buildings use key resources more efficiently when compared to conventional buildings which are simply built to code, it helps create healthier work and living environments, gain in productivity and improved employee health and comfort, conserve energy and water, improve air quality, reduce solid waste, lower operating costs and increased asset value and demonstrate an owner’s commitment to environmental stewardship and social responsibility.
